IN an action-packed week of juniors action, Kelty Hearts top the Super League with four wins from four games while Crossgates Primrose registered their first win since returning this season.

After winning against Musselburgh on Saturday (see below), Kelty recorded another victory last night after a five-goal thriller at Jeanfield Swifts.

Sean O'Neil, Scott Dalziel and Conrad Courts grabbed the goals as Thomas Courts' side lead the table by two points from Broughty Athletic.

Kelty Hearts 3 Musselburgh Athletic 1

DELIGHTED Kelty Hearts boss Thomas Courts heaped praise on his players after they maintained their 100 per cent Super League record on Saturday.

Stephen Husband’s double and Brian Ritchie’s header earned the Jambos a 3-1 win over Musselburgh to send them clear at the top following 4-2 and 1-0 wins over Bonnyrigg Rose and Dundonald Bluebell.

Ahead of the trip to Jeanfield Swifts last night (Wednesday), Kelty were the only team to have a flawless league record, and Courts felt his side were completely dominant against their East Lothian opponents.

Husband gave them the lead after 18 minutes when he converted Ritchie’s header that cannoned off the upright, but the hosts were shocked 10 minutes before half-time when Ewan Ralton rifled an excellent low shot into the bottom corner to pull Musselburgh level.

Kelty continued to press in the second period and were rewarded in the 65th minute when Archie Campbell’s perfect centre from the right was met by Ritchie, who powered a header beyond Kieron Renton in the visiting goal.

The leaders wrapped up the points with eight minutes left when Husband picked the ball up outside the box and, after playing a neat one-two with Campbell, sent a crisp strike home from the edge of the box to leave his boss purring.

Courts said: “We were unbelievable on Saturday and were in total control of the game. The only blip was that they grabbed a goal against the run of play.

“We were well worthy of the margins of victory against Bonnyrigg and on Saturday, and what I want to drive the players is the competition we have in the dressing room.”

Blackburn United 8 Oakley United 1

CRAIG COWAN admitted he was gutted by Oakley’s thrashing at Blackburn but insists his side can turn their season around.

The Blairwood Park men, relegated from the Premier League last season, were installed as one of the favourites for promotion from the South Division, but after losing 4-1 to Rosyth on the opening day, things got worse in West Lothian on Saturday.

The United boss admitted that the result was “devastating” but believes his squad have the ability to get their campaign back on track, starting with this weekend’s home clash with Crossgates Primrose.

He said: “I thought the Rosyth game was the worst I have felt in football but this is worse. I’m gutted with the results and performances. It’s devastating because nobody anticipated this start after a good pre-season. We need to defend as a unit and basic balls over the top are beating us.

“We had a good meeting with the players and I’m still upbeat; we’re not going to give up and we need to fight even harder. I believe in my own and my squad’s ability so we’ll work on things in training and get through it.

“The next four games will be telling and we need to take something from them to stop the top teams getting away from us. I still believe we can go up but the club has not had a winning mentality for a long time; in the last 18 games of last season we won two. It’s not something that happens overnight.”

Rosyth 3 Craigroyston 3

ROSYTH co-manager Kevin Smith was frustrated with a draw, despite fighting back from a two-goal deficit.

In a six-goal thriller at Recreation Park, Smith lamented “bad decisions” in the final third that he felt cost his side a deserved win against the South Division new boys.

The Edinburgh outfit scored in the 25th minute when Kyle Boggie controlled a cross to shoot past Mark Rowbotham before he doubled their advantage just three minutes later after an error by the Rosyth goalkeeper.

The hosts, impressive in their 4-1 opening day win at Oakley, struck the woodwork twice in the frustrating first half but responded in style after the interval.

Midfielder Steven Slimmings pulled one back 10 minutes into the second period after Craigroyston failed to clear Tam Hampson’s cross, and minutes later Rosyth were level when Scott Morrison fired beyond goalkeeper Kieron Beveridge.

The turnaround was complete in the 67th minute when Hampson turned in Scott Russell’s low cross and, despite pushing forward and having chances to kill the game off, Boggie completed his hat-trick to snatch a point for the visitors.

Smith said: “It’s a lesson that we need to keep the ball better when we’re on top, but they did what we asked of them. We’ll take the positives from it more than the negatives and if it takes goals like that to take points from us, then we’ll do OK.”

Stoneyburn 1 Crossgates Primrose 3

CROSSGATES Primrose enjoyed a day to remember on Saturday as they won their first match since returning to junior football.

Andy Brown’s side, unfortunate to go down to hotly-tipped Blackburn United in their opening game, are up to eighth in the South Division table after an impressive show on the road.

Stephen Stark gave Primrose a half-time lead and, although the hosts pulled level, Liam Forbes’ double in the 58th and 72nd minutes sealed a landmark win for the rejuvenated Humbug Park outfit.

Boss Brown, who missed the game through holiday, said: “By all accounts we did well and it could’ve been more. It is a difficult place to go so I’m pleased; it’s a slow process but the jigsaw is coming together and we are getting there.

“It’s going to be an interesting league and will be up and down; I thought 3-1 flattered Blackburn when we played them, and then we’ve got Oakley on Saturday. I don’t think they’re as bad as their two results show and they’ll be fighting hard to get back on form.

“We signed Gordon Brown, who has got great experience and is the missing link we needed at the back. He’s steadied the ship with the young ones, which is what’s needed at this level, and they’re enjoying playing alongside him. We’re speaking to Berwick Rangers about possibly getting a couple of their under-20s on loan, so it’s about adding quality where we can.”
