EVENTS in West Fife are set to benefit from a share of a six-figure pot of cash made available ahead of a global competition heading to Scotland.

In August, the 2023 UCI Cycling World Championships, featuring 11 days of competition across seven cycling disciplines, will take place, welcoming thousands of amateur and elite cyclists from more than 120 countries.

It is set to be the first event of its kind, with competitors vying for 13 titles, and a Community Cycling Fund is set to support five events in the Kingdom.

Robbie Clyde, head of EventScotland, said: "The 24 events being supported through the fund will give people the chance to discover the joy riding a bike can bring to their everyday lives in a fun and safe environment, while also helping create a lasting benefit from our hosting of the 2023 UCI Cycling World Championships."

The development strand of the fund will be administered by sportscotland and the events strand delivered by EventsScotland – and events in Dunfermline and Aberdour have received a share of £160,000 from the second round of the latter.

Fife Revolutions cycle speedway club, based at their custom-built track at Queen Anne High School, will be supported in hosting a taster session and a race on Saturday June 10.

And Carnegie Cyclones, a Go-Ride youth cycling club for children aged seven to 15, will also receive backing to organise, in conjunction with Fife Council, a cyclocross event at Hawkcraig Park, Silversands, Aberdour, on July 29.

In addition, a road crit, organised by the council, will take place on June 14 at Fife Cycle Park in Lochgelly. It will showcase road cycling and there will be a mountain bike dirt crit on June 25 at Middleden mountain biking trails in Kirkcaldy.

The events are aimed to help showcase the power of the bike, as part of a national celebration of cycling ahead of the 2023 world championships.

Most of the championships will be held in Glasgow, although the men's elite road race is scheduled to start in Edinburgh and travel through West Fife.

Craig Burn, 2023 UCI Cycling World Championships director of strategy and policy impacts, commented: "The world’s greatest riders will soon come together in Glasgow and across Scotland for the 2023 UCI Cycling World Championships.

"This first of its kind event will be the perfect stage to inspire more people to ride bikes whether it be for sport, leisure or transport.

"The 24 events being supported through the Community Cycling Fund will provide a fantastic opportunity for local communities to celebrate cycling in a fun and safe environment across the length and breadth of the country as we count down to the biggest cycling event ever this August."

The Community Cycling Fund is a joint initiative between the 2023 UCI Cycling World Championships, EventScotland, Cycling Scotland and sportscotland, developed to support sustainable cycling projects and free events across the country in the build-up to the World Championships.
