A WEST FIFE cycle speedway club have missed out on picking up an accolade at a national awards ceremony.

Fife Cycle Speedway, based at Queen Anne High School, were shortlisted in the 'Event of the Year' category at the 2022 Scottish Cycling awards for their hosting of a Home International competition that featured teams from Scotland, England, Wales and Ireland.

A registered charity, the club welcomed riders from the four nations, plus around 300 spectators, to its ExxonMobil-sponsored 'Fastbowl' venue, which opened in 2016 and is one of only three purpose-built cycle speedway tracks in Scotland, in May.

Scottish Cycling said that the event was "significant for the club as it recognised all the good work and progress that has been made" since their formation and "showcased the best riders in the UK participating across four categories", which were for women, junior, veteran and senior competitors.

The track record was also broken four times on the day and the club, who field teams in the British Cycling North and Scotland leagues, and its event were shortlisted for the accolade alongside the Scottish National Criterium Championships and Aberdeen Cycling Festival, and the British National CX Trophy, an event in cyclocross, which was hosted by Falkirk Junior Bike Club.

Although the latter event was declared the winner, Craig Masson, head coach with Fife Cycle Speedway and its Fife Revolutions teams, said: "It was great just to be nominated and have more exposure for speedway. To be recognised at national level is great. Being nominated, and having everyone talk about speedway, is great."

The award nomination comes after a busy year for the Revolutions, who competed in Division One of the British Cycling North and Scotland League, as well as in Division Two, where they secured a place in the play-off final.

Although they missed out on winning it for a third time – they lost out 78-71 to Sheffield Stars – they did have title success to celebrate, as they went on to pick up the Scottish league title a week later.

Entering two teams in the final round, held at Edinburgh Falcons' track, who also welcomed teams from Glasgow Cyclones and Northumbria Vikings, Fife won by two points to take the championship victory ahead of Northumbria.

Craig, who has been elected as development officer following the North and Scotland league AGM, said that the Revolutions had secured ex-England international Jason Keith and Jake Slight, from Edinburgh, to race for their Division One team next year, and revealed that they would be entering a team to participate in the British Cycling Cycle Speedway Indoor Championships, which will be held in Coventry on January 7.

Before then, the club will hold its first-ever presentation evening this Saturday, and will honour riders who are currently competing for the club, as well as those who have been involved since its formation.
