DUNFERMLINE'S Alison Peasgood has claimed a bronze medal at the World Triathlon Para Championships in Abu Dhabi.

The 34-year-old, together with guide Brooke Gillies, from Glenrothes, placed third in the women's PTVI classification for visually impaired athletes today.

Having finished fourth in Tokyo alongside guide Nikki Bartlett, Alison was able to make the jump onto the podium and take home a world championship medal alongside Gillies, having crashed together at the European championships earlier in the year.

Alison, who won in 2016 won silver at the Rio Paralmypics, and has been crowned world champion twice (2014 and 2016), and European champion three times (2015, 2016 and 2018), finished in a time of one hour, nine minutes and 40 seconds.

She completed her 750 metre swim in 11.53, the 20km bike ride in 30.13, and the 5km run in 21.21, to finish behind winner Susana Rodriguez, of Spain (01:06.26), and Italian runner-up, Anna Barbaro (01:09.25).

Following her success, she told the British Triathlon website: "Being bronze medallists at the Worlds sounds amazing.

"After the season I’ve had with lots of ups and downs, we crashed at Europeans in Brooke’s first race so to have the confidence on that bike course today is a massive testament to her.

"I couldn’t be happier and prouder of her."

Gillies added: "Alison wasn’t 100% but she absolutely nailed it. She had a sore calf on the run, but we managed to still do it.

"Especially after the last race, we’re just so proud to get to the end so we’re so happy."
